If you are trying to be brave and saying "Oh I'm not scared of ANYTHING", your just lying to yourself. As long as you are human, you will have fears. Something puts those scary thoughts in your head and give you nightmares and goosebumps.
There are many theories as to why you are scared of something. It might be a relative coming back to haunt you. Or just something you ate before bed that made you sick. But my theory is that society does this to use. Most fears are created by society, the scary movies, the ghost stories, the economy (damn you fiscal cliff). How many times in your life have you been scared that a monster will jump out of your closet or the bogey man will pull you from your bed.
But they also have tried to mend those fears by creating movies that portray monsters as good (ex Monsters INC.).

But if you think about it, they are trying to convince kids that monster are not bad, they are just doing their job.
I find it ironic that we have all this scary content and fear is frowned upon in society. Another reason fear is cause is peer pressure. If you are scared of a movie and your friend makes you go, you might as well just have signed yourself up for a week of nightmares. Friends have a lot of influence of your life and you should always be able to say no. If they don't understand, they aren't a true friend.
There are also fears created by nature that we can't control. If you live in Kansas, you might be worried about a freak tornado. If you live on the beach, a tsunami could destroy your house. I believe these fears are not bad, they are just a result.
Back the the fear of heights. Whenever I think about why I am scared of heights, I blame it on trusting the structure too much. I know that sounds silly, but if you think about it, we put our lives in the hands of the people that built the structure. In movie, when a building collapses due to structural failure, I am reminded of my fear.
Fears are a result, nothing to be ashamed of.
